Chicken Fever

Have I mentioned our hens have gone broody? It's a natural instinct where the chickens really want to hatch something, so they sit around all day. Egg production stops.

It's recommended you remove the hen from the hen house at least daily to remind them to eat. Carrie took it a step further. She evicted the ladies and blocked off the hen house.

They were still trying to figure out what happened when I peeked in before work.

When I got home, I found a chicken pile.

Instincts are strong. There are all sorts of strategies to stop broodiness online (like a cold water bath), but we're fine to mainly let them ride it out. Carrie's daily eviction gives them a chance to stretch, eat, drink, and crap.

Carrie pulled out the chickens out to enjoy the sun and warm weather when she got home.

Shane wanted to help.

Carrie brought out the new chicks, too.

Lester was interested in the babies. We had to drive him off a couple of times.

Saturday morning, Carrie, Shane, and I went to a chicken exchange at the local tractor supply. The exchange never materialized, but Carrie bought materials to fence the chicks in until the flocks integrate.

Pidge and Allura (mostly Pidge) sometimes like to vault the fence and check out life on the other side. Everyone looks like they're getting along.
