I loved Shining Force when I was a kid. Shining Force II is easily my favorite game on the Sega Genesis.
So I thought it would be fun to play something similar to it with Shane on the Switch. Fire Emblem Three Houses was on sale.
Both games are tactical RPGs. Imagine a chess board, but change it into a map. Now change all the chess pieces into characters who move in different ways with different abilities and who can level up and learn new tricks over time. Plus, there's a story!
Shining Force's stories are kid appropriate and I would have liked to play more of that with Shane. I only have it on my computer, though, and he's a sucker for tablets and more modern graphics. Three Houses seemed to be okay from what I read online, but I planned have Shane play it with me. It was going to be a summer thing for us.
Shane started the game and I watched. A few nights later, I started my own campaign to learn the ins and outs if he had questions.
I never expected Carrie to take a shine to it. Lately, it's not unusual to find her on the Switch and covered in cats.
And she's lapped me. Shane's attention has moved to other things, I'm still working through part one, and Carrie has already beat the game. She's on New Game+ and past where I'm at! She's been reading up on some of the lore to distract herself when she had an upset stomach, as well.
In the end, it's probably a good thing that Shane's attention has moved on. The story hasn't been bad for him so far, but it's a little too complex. Carrie's play time has made sure we've got our money's worth out of the purchase and I take the Switch with me to the pool to keep me occupied while Shane swims.
And now, I leave you with a picture of Shane curled up with cats. Happy didn't have an initial choice, but she decided to stay and Max joined up later.
