Thursday night was the first meet of the year. I wrapped up my practice, grabbed Shane, and drove to the wrong school. Turned out there were two campuses.
Lesson learned.
We made it late, but in time for the last two matches.
Shane made friends and hung out in the stands.
Coach K had brought his kids.
Shane played with my phone again, as well (cell phones are the new books, I swear).
The boys did well. We went 2-1. They would have won every match if not for forfeits. They're an excitable bunch. The whole team was up, jumping, and hollering like wild men when our last wrestler of the night went for the pin (got it, too!).
The level of competition looks very different here than up north. The team has a lot of athletic ability, but little experience. I hope he I can make a difference with that. One kid shocked me. He'd never wrestled, but instinctively threw a lateral drop. He got rolled and pinned afterward, but the drop was beautiful. Especially for a big man. I'm not big on throws, but if he's got the timing and physique to pull it off I'll go over it with him in practice.
We were both ready for bed time!
PS - If I knew the basketball coach, I might show them this pic.
Espionage! Shane wanted to draw on the board, but I wouldn't let him. I thought it was funny.
