I'm a coach again. I signed on with the local high school. It's a whole new world.
My last head coach ran a tight and intense ship. He ran the room with a big personality, iron grip, and was incredibly technical. We had "cuts" at the end of the week.
My new head coach runs a very loose ship. He has some health issues and can't roll around. However, he's been a coach for over 30 years for various sports, knows the kids, knows their parents, and they respond to him.
Day 1 was hydration testing. Practice started late, the kids ran their own warm-up, and when coach didn't come after the water break I started teaching based on the notecard he gave me.
Like I said, a whole new world. The room has a healthy feel to it, though. The kids are there because they want to be and they're not afraid to work. A lot of them have athletic talent. Experience is in short supply, but I hope to help with that. I started off the teaching Day 2, as well. The kids and I rolled with it.
Have I mentioned that everyone seems far more relaxed down here?
I asked "Where's the best to park?"
"By the fire lane or loading dock outside the door. "
"There won't be trouble if I park there?"
"Only if there's a fire."
I looked. There were six cars all parked out along the yellow curb.
That's so funny! I'm glad you're in a more relaxed area. And so proud of you for coaching. You are a gift from God to those athletes.
