I picked up Shane from after school early for a snack and to gear up.
Then we went to practice! It was a cool day. I had wondered at his choice of long sleeves and pants, but it turned out to be perfect for the weather.
One of the after school teachers walked a student to practice, because his parents weren't able to make it in time. I never realized that was an option!
However, it's was better that I was there. Shane was acting twenty kinds of goofy and not listening well at the beginning of practice. He started to throw his ball instead of kick it, run off when they were jogging in a line, interrupt coaches, and "Look! A DANDELION!"
Three warnings later, we were 10 minutes into practice and Shane was mostly ready to listen. I don't like to call out when I'm not the coach, so I'll call Shane's name, make eye contact, and give him a finger-count to let him know to shape up. I don't expect him to be the best or serious all of the time, but participation and respecting the coaches are non-negotiable.
In the end, Shane's goofy, hyper-excitable, wild, and distractible, but at least he's well meaning.
He's still a total ham, too. It's pretty funny to watch him in his own world.
Is all the posturing and sound effects from TV? I suspect so. It's not like he watches a crazy amount, but he's clearly a character!
Shane started to get frustrated when he wasn't an instant super star near the end. Fatigue could have factored in, as well. He stood off to the side and half-participated in the last game. He got upset whenever he did get passed the ball, because he wanted to take his time to pass it only to have the mob descend upon him (Standing still with the ball doesn't work well in soccer!).
We got our team shirts and socks at the end of practice. Our first game is on Saturday.
