COVID 19 - The Coronavirus: Gardening Weekend

Ah, the weekend. A time for family! A time for rest and re.....

Wait a minute.

Carrie, Shane, and Grandma played some rummy while Grandpa and I unloaded materials.

The Gardener General gave us instructions and we started to assemble raised beds for planting.

It was a work weekend! Coats came off as the weather and the workers warmed up.

Grandpa had pre-assembled some parts of the raised beds, so the assembly went quickly.

We got Shane to help some raking mulch.

Loki supervised.

We picked up carryout from Tavern on the James for lunch. Grandpa continued to shed layers!

That's not me in the hat, by the way. That's Gay's step-son, Patrick. He's a landscaper and was happy to pick up an extra job with the pandemic going on. He was hard at work throughout the front yard, but joined us for lunch (He 'got' the name of our farm which made Carrie very happy!).

After lunch, it was back to work.

Shane shows an interest in plants. Much more than I think I ever have.

Grandma directed Grandpa and I's efforts.

Shane was happy to tag along as Grandma's assistant. We staged all the plants to see how they'd fit in the beds before we called it a day.

Carrie did barn type things and talked with boarders while we were gardening. Loki ran back and forth between everybody and got very excited when Buddha showed up.

We gave a good effort on Saturday, but one day was not enough for Grandma's plans! They returned Sunday for Round 2.

Grandpa and I unloaded wave 2 of supplies and the planting began in earnest.

Carrie happily sacrificed many of my old undershirts to the cause. "They're not even white anymore!"

The shirts were cut in half and put into the bottom of the garden bins.

The real hero of the weekend was the gator. I was about to grab a wheelbarrow when Grandpa asked, "Why don't we use that?"

My first inclination was to say, "Nah, we don't need it." Then, I stopped to think about it.

Grandpa was right. We bought the gator to use, so why not use it?

We hauled materials around the house, shoveled dirt, and saved ourselves a ton of effort for probably less than a couple bucks of gas.

I put the gator to use moving more of the lumber while I was waiting for gardening directions.

It sure beat carrying them one by one.

I cleared away the fallen black locust branch and continued under the fenceline.

Darn, black locust got me. That name is now stuck in me.

The prick motivated me to be cautious with the logs. That's why I noticed this gal.

Gay and her husband, John, came by to chat, talk horses, and see Patrick. Gay supported Carrie with a horse talk, too.

I was happy for the visitors! There weren't masks, but we were outside and kept our distances. Carrie's not letting anyone in the house. Grandma has to use the barn toilet if the urge strikes!

We got a lot done, but it looks like I already know our plans for next weekend: More gardening!
