Sunday has become the social day of the week. It starts with Laura and Amy coming to do barn chores. Then it's time for church. Shane sat with me in the balcony this Sunday!
99% he's going to pick to go with kids from now on, but I was proud he sat with me!
We went to Wegmans for lunch afterward, but we didn't go home when we finished.
We went to volleyball.
I wanted Shane to do a winter sport. He's extroverted. He's energetic. Shane said he hates basketball and he didn't want to do wrestling. He would've liked to do futsal (indoor soccer), but I couldn't find any clubs within a reasonable driving range.
But I found a volleyball club. It's indoors, Shane's seen Haikyu, and the timing was great.
So I signed Shane up. He was indignant at first, but I hoped he'd keep an open mind....especially after I didn't see any other boys while we waited in line.
Volleyball isn't a popular male sport where we live. None of the high schools have boys teams. My own experience is limited to trying it in gym in school (and gym isn't required after 10th grade).
I breathed a little easier when I saw a boy in the gym. Shane wouldn't be the only one!
I would have enjoyed watching, but parents were requested not to hang around. I sat in parking lot, read, and distracted myself on my phone instead.
Shane came out in a good mood. He'd said he'd got bumped and elbowed a lot by people trying to get the ball (bad) and his armpits were super sweaty (also bad)!. But he recognized a couple of kids from church, liked some of the games, and said his goalie skills helped out ("It's like playing goalie for a certain area of the court!").
I'm praying Shane enjoys week 2! My goals here are for him to be exposed to something new, learn some, and play some. If he makes friends and asks to sign up again, that'd be awesome. If he decides volleyball isn't for him, I won't force him to do it again.
Bare minimum, I hope Shane feels confident if people play volleyball at the pool this summer and that he can relate to the characters on Haikyu better if Carrie puts it on!
That sounds fun! You are the most wonderful dad, Mike! We are so proud of you! And kudos for taking Shane to church on Sundays. Passing on your faith is the best thing you could ever do for Shane. We enjoy your blogs so much. Thank you!
