On Monday, I took him to the doctor's office. He's had a bad cough and congestion for almost two weeks now. Carrie and I didn't think it was anything serious, but we pay for insurance so why not?
We were there for over an hour to hear "It's a bad chest cold or allergies," and I had to pull out all my Daddy tricks to survive.
Like spinning rolley-chairs.
After we got home from the doctors, Georgeanne and Janis came by for Shane's IFSP meeting. It went on for over an hour. How's that for a pair of back to back exciting adventures for a little boy?
Shane still qualifies for services, so we'll get Child Find's help until he turns three in December. His fine motor skills are low, but barely good enough that they don't count as a delay. Shane is 31 months old. He rated 24 months in skill, and a delay was considered 23 months and change! What qualified Shane for services was his social-emotional development level. His receptive and expressive language skills were rated at 36 months, but his repetitive use of language and reluctance to interact with peers was marked as "atypical."
Personally, I do think it's atypical, but not a huge cause of concern yet. Shane's still growing and learning, and he had to qualify for something to keep receiving services. I think that since he has less than five months of eligibility left, has made a lot of progress, and we've been appreciative of all the help that everyone wants to continue working with him. He can be a little charmer. Georgeanne told me on one daycare visit Shane tried to get his teachers to pour her a cup of juice for snack time.
That's about the point I started asking lots of questions about Shane's daycare. Our current location does well enough I'm resistant to change it, but it's not an A+ and it's in the opposite direction of work for Carrie and I. Then, we have to backtrack through traffic to get to work. It's not a deal breaker, and Carrie and I don't like the idea jerking Shane around from place to place, but it is something we were considering.
Georgeanne said that Shane is definitely fitting in more in his class. At first, she thought the whole class was chaos incarnate, but a veteran teacher took over since. Shane's starting to use his teacher's names, follows class routines, and actively participates in any music lessons (Georgeanne said the music teacher is great!). She also said that Shane's not a Montessori kid. Montessori schools are better for kids who will independently explore things and they don't necessarily work on the social aspect which is what Shane needs.
The meeting ended with Shane puking in his training toilet. I tricked him into sipping some 'grape juice,' but his taste buds screamed medicine and that was that. Instant coughing, gagging, and BLARHDLFHSLDFing.
We took a shower and then it was nap time. Compare doctor visits and puking in a toilet to going to the mall, riding escalators and getting Chic-Fil-A and you'll know why Shane loves going to Nana and Pop's so much! I take care of things. I'm not the party/cool-trip animal I thought I'd be as a parent. Shane woke up coughing and gagging earlier tonight and I went up earlier. He spit in the bath tub (no puke!) and then I held him upright until he started snoring and laid him back down. I think Shane loves and trusts me when he's not butting heads with me. I have ar fun potty training story to tell, too, but not tonight!
