So who is Lane anyway? He comes to us from Sarah's rescue.
Lane is a 'retired' racehorse.
Apparently a winning one, too!
However, Lane got injured. Then, he was thrown away.
Lane spent months in kill pen auctions before being picked up by a rescue. However, he got injured again not long after.
Warning! Graphic! Sarah had a picture of the injury. If you don't like meat, I wouldn't recommend clicking.
Lane somehow managed to get his skin caught and ripped himself a new one.
The vet sewed it back up, but Lane will feel it for the rest of his life.
It healed, but the scars are still evident. You can feel they're raised if you run your fingers across Lane's chest. I think it's remarkable the scars aren't more pronounced!
Carrie started Lane on the lunge. He vastly prefers going to the left, but Carrie says that's typical for all horses and not just race ones.
She's started backing him to walk and trot around. All of Lane's past experience was "Go fast! Go-Go-Go!," so he's a little unsure of himself in the arena.
It's a team job. Carrie does all the riding and handling while I take pictures. Most of the time, I even keep my thumb out of them.
Lane's a temporary resident, but one we hope to leave a mark on. Carrie's been "getting him groceries" to fill him out. Her suggestion to shoe him seems to have worked wonders and now it's a matter of work in the saddle. That's somewhat limited, because Carrie only wants to ride him when someone else is present (whether that's me or a barn buddy). When she's alone, Carrie limits the training to manners, baths, and lunge work.
So far, things are looking good! Sarah's been happy with the videos and pics of Lane's progress. We hope she'll be 100% satisfied when he's trailered back home one day.
