A day spent with friends is a day well spent. Shane got to spend time with friends on the soccer pitch. I was an honorary coach for the day and joined them.
It was really hot. One of our players, Jeremiah, took his shirt off refused to put it back on. Twenty minutes later, Shane wanted to do the same thing.
The other coach was Shane's hotshot coach, Dave. He was short players, so we kept subbing out two of our kids to play on the other side.
Jonas' dad was the other honorary coach of the day. Ginger power.
We got to spend time with my good friend, John, after the game! John drove down from Northern Virginia. He actually pulled up as we were walking to our car after the game.
I'm not ashamed to admit it, but we plopped Shane down on the Switch lickety-split.
John had downloaded Shovel Knight for him. They tried to play it co-op at first.
Having a 7-year old hop around at random made it more difficult than single player! Shane was mesmerized. Carrie had bought some goodies for snacks and I started to partake while Shane played.
John took on a side project. You can see him at work in the sunlight.
John brought a game to try out. He's a big Games Workshop fan and accidentally bought two of the same Shadespire expansion armies.
He decided to bequeath one to me. He did the assembly.
When the skaven were all set up, we took a Netflix break with Carrie. We really enjoyed Saiki K and it seemed up John's humor alley.
Shane happily bounced from the Switch to TV to Transformers on the computer. That left John and I free to learn how to play Shadespire. John got the win.
Carrie went off to the barn and we went off to the game store afterwards. John was going to head home after dinner. Our path was strategic to cut down his drive time.
We hit up Chic Fil A. Shane's wrestling and baseball friend, Matthew Jr, happened to be sitting right behind us. They ran off and roughhoused through the whole play structure (At least until Matthew's little brother started to take off his clothes).
John and I talked and tried out some Magic duel decks he'd picked up. We reminisced about playing in middle school in the library, Mr. Greek's room in 9th grade, and talked about old friends.
All good things must come to an end, though. We said our good-byes and told John to visit again. I'd love to have a game day gathering at some point.
