I almost dropped to my knees and yelled, "BAAAANNNNDD!!" today (Imagine Captain Kirk yelling, "Kahn.").
We had our season ending meet today. We went out with more of a whisper than a bang. I only had five kids show up. One was injured, one was suspended, and the others were busy with a district band rehearsal.
Charlottesville has afterschool ADD. It feels like there's no such thing as committing to a sport for a season. I know, I know, there are some great clubs that meet every week all year round, and it's good for kids to be well rounded. I happen to think that there are also some great benefits from dedicating yourself to something for a short time. Like a sport season.
We arrived at Covenant before their school even got out. I had my kids help their coach roll out mats to be kind and keep them busy.
We got killed on the mat. Three of my kids went 0-2 when I thought at least a pair of them would go 1-1 or better. The other kid drew two really tough competitors (and only showed up to practice once every week or two...). My final kids were 1-0.
It's not the end I anticipated, but it's nice to be done. I need to plan something for the end of the year, but I'm ready to rest some.
Next week, the high school will be getting ready for their Regionals. I plan to go to practice and help. Several have a chance at advancing to states, but there should only be four 'normal' practices to go.
