Shane was on a quest: To catch Chum and Flum. Shane grabbed his fishing pole and his glasses and was raring to go.
Chum and Flum are the bass we spotted yesterday. They are a size class larger than anything else we've seen in the pond. I think they're larger than the one big bass Shane caught by accident with Grandpa.
The urgency of the mission made the outing so much more fun.
Yet, there was a lot of frustration. The smaller fish kept hopping on the hook to Shane's disappointment. They acted as a screen preventing Shane from reaching his white whale.
The water was so shallow I was able to get a few shots to prove Chum's existence. The spotted fish you see is probably about the length of my hand.
Chum's friend, Flum, joined him and Shane was in a tizzy. We tried different hooks, different lures, bread, no bread, and crappie bait. Shane tried to drop his hook on their heads and right in front of them (though mostly on their heads or behind them! We're working on aim).
The bobber got a bight. Chum swallowed the whole thing. Shane's face lit up and he started to tug and Chum spit the bobber right back out. It was the only thing they showed any interest in.
The fish were among some rocks in a small inlet at one point. I honestly thought about laying in the water to trap them. The water was so shallow and they were right there.
Alas, our prey went uncaught. Shane got frustrated at all of the little fish who were only too happy to hop on the hook.
We had a fun morning out! I was trying to tire Shane out some, because I was going to leave for the evening to go to Patrick's bachelor party. More on that tomorrow.
