COVID 19 - The Coronavirus: Move-in Day for Ernie

My phone rang. It was Carrie. "I need you to get Eddy as fast as you can."

I was walking out to the field (still in pj's!) when I saw Carrie pulling up.

Eddy was deep asleep!

"Sorry to interrupt your beauty sleep, old man!" Eddy sat up, but he didn't get up. I had to put on his halter and lead him back to the barn.

There was a gaggle of gals unloading cars and trailers waiting to introduce Eddy to an old friend: Ernie.

Ernie is Laura's horse. Ernie and Eddy were buds at their previous stable before it started closing down. Heidi, Barbara, Amy, and Laura are all horse buddies reunited.

Loki was eager to meet everyone!

Eddy and Ernie went right to eating next to each other.

The boys were instantly relaxed and back to their old ways.

Small world moment: Amy used to coach at my high school! She knew some of the people still in the building!

Ernie is a friendly fellow. He walked up behind me and started using my butt to scratch his ears!

As well as it started, there was still going to be an adjustment period. Carrie's come up with a plan to use up some of Eddy's old food and transition him to what we use for feed.

Eddy comes with some special compressed hay, too. Laura had to provide supplementals at the old place. There's no reason to save them, so we plan to feed them to Eddy here and switch to our stuff when he runs out.

It's super compressed. You have to fluff it after it goes into a feed bag, so that it doesn't decompress in their stomachs.

It reminds a little bit of the fake grass in Easter egg baskets. Only a more natural green.

Our fields looked really green in this shot Carrie took.

We didn't introduce Sam at first. He was in the dry lot at fat camp. It's always interesting introducing a horse to the herd. You can choose to put them in the field or not, but once they're out there they're going to do whatever horses will do.

"I'm okay if Ernie kicks Sam into remembering his manners," Carrie said.

There was a little bit of chasing and some small threats, but it went really smooth for the most part.

The only blip was when Ernie walked over to say hi to Sam's current girlfriend Kitty. She's in heat and not picky about which male she'll flirt with over the fence.

Sam came in and kicked air to chase Ernie out of "his" corner.

It settled down after that one blip. Ernie and Eddy stick side by side most of the time they're in the field. Sam's still the food hog and first to trot to be fed, but the older guys (Ernie's 21 and Eddy's 22) seem to shake their head at the youngin and do their own thing (Sam's 5).

We're thrilled Laura and Ernie have decided to join us! He's calm to help balance out Sam and Laura's going to be helping with a shift of chores once a week. She may even be able to barn sit for us for time to time! I'm happy about that!
