COVID 19 - The Coronavirus: My Typical Day

So what's a typical day look like around here during the pandemic?

Wake-up is 7-7:45 AM. I'm normally up by ~7:30 AM. Carrie could be as early as 7 AM or as late as 8 AM. Shane wakes up between 7 and 8, as well, but he probably averages a 7:45 AM wakeup.

The first hour of the morning is normally slow. I take the dog out. Shane feeds the cats. Carrie and I drink our coffee. I do my daily Bible reading and Carrie has started to join me for some of it. Shane's normally the only really awake one. He's bouncing around post Pop Tarts and poking the dog, throwing a paper airplane, or talking to us.

Our daily tasks start with morning barn chores. Sometimes Shane comes out. Sometimes we leave him in while Carrie and I go out. If Shane's left in, he may start his daily reading, scoop the cat poop, or handle some other minor chore (and probably goofs off the rest of the time!).

After barn chores, there's normally a period from 9:30 or 10 AM that lasts until 7 PM. For the bulk of the day there's homeschooling, chores, horses, working, cleaning, resting, reading, random activities, and some minor electronics.

My day normally includes:

Barn time - At least 1 hour. Average of 2 hours. Maximum of 4 hours.

School work - At least 45 minutes answering emails, updating Schoology page, Zoom meetings, planning, etc. Average 1.5 hours. Maximum 4.5 hours (3/17 - the day of grading!)

Housework and chores - Probably at least an hour of random cleaning, laundry, dishes, etc.

Loki - I take him out multiple times a day for bathroom break. Take him to chase cars, etc.

Cats - Shane's in charge of breakfast feeding and taking care of the cat pot.

Blog - Been trying for at least 30 minutes a day. When I've been on a hot streak, it may have been up to 3 or 4 hours. I've finally caught up!

Shane's homeschooling - A while!

Shane bouncing around the house - A while!

Reading - Hopefully at least 30 minutes with my book. I've read 17 chapters this week since starting on Monday (280 pages)  *Current as of Friday afternoon when I wrote this

Reading random websites, the news, and killing time - Probably longer than I should (I read a neat article about kids cutting out fish tongues in Norway!)

Lunch and snacking happens sometime in there. I'm probably going to gain weight being here!

Shane probably averages around an hour or two of free electronics time during the day. The bulk of his time doesn't normally come until after 5 PM. He normally gets a couple of hours at the end of the day.

Around 7 PM, we normally do horse chores and dinner or dinner and horse chores. There's no guaranteed order. When those are done, we're done for the day! The TV is on, someone's on a computer, and maybe Carrie's asleep on the couch by the time Shane turns in.

Bedtime for Shane is between 9 and 9:30 PM. He probably averages going to bed around 9:15 or 9:20 PM which is later than it would be with school (We were stricter about 9 PM until everything was closed up).

Carrie's bedtime could be 8:30 PM or it could be 11:15 PM. It doesn't usually fit a pattern.

I normally try to head to the bedroom by 10:15 PM. I might exercise a little, but the goal is to get ready and hop in bed. Then I read a bit or fart around on my phone until about 11 PM.

Some random data points:

What're we watching?
Carrie and I - Finished Haikyu season 3 (10 eps / 22 mins each), Picard (on ep 8 / ~1 hr each).

Me: The only thing I watch on my own is The Dice Tower lately.

Carrie: Stuff? She's got a few animes or minor series she's been watching, but it's on her phone so you'd have to ask her!

Shane - Phineas and Ferb (He likes to sing the songs), Star Wars Rebels (Started the 2nd week), there's been a lack of Pokemon this second week and I'm a-ok with it!

What're we playing?
Carrie - She played an hour of Portal doing a speed run with Shane watching. That's about it.

Shane - Portal 2 is the big one. He's almost beat it! He's gotten very frustrated multiple times (and stay frustrated when I refuse to help since it's a puzzle game).  Shane tried Battle for Wesnoth and Templar Battleforce a little. Sim City on SNES was real popular one week. He's played some Hearthstone and Angry Birds 2 on my phone. One night he played on CoolMathGames for a bit.Lots of little things that add up, but nothing with extreme loyalty. I probably could let him play more.

Me - Tiny Islands by David King for my daily school challenge (takes 5 minutes). I did a DOTA 2 with Matt, John, and Patrick one night. I tried a little Battle for Wesnoth after I showed Shane (3.4 hours in 2 weeks split between us). Played some Templar Battleforce (5.5 hours in 2 weeks split between us).

What're we reading?
Carrie - She's reading! I'm so proud! It's a book Inger recommended to her. She skimmed the whole thing it to see if it'd be worth reading first and then decided to read through it in detail. That's not something I've ever done.

Me - The Great Hunt, Book 2 in the Wheel of Time

Shane - Riding Freedom (from school), and he's browsed or flipped through a ton of books I hope he's really been reading like The Ultimate Top Secret Guide to Taking Over the World, anything by Dave Pilkey, some Hank the Cowdogs, Calving and Hobbes, etc.
