Thursday was Showcase night. As the PLC chair for Geometry I had to help plan what we'd be doing.
I picked up the idea of doing something with tessellations from my job at LMA. Apex had an online quiz involving them and I thought it'd be a fun (and easy) HW. The goal was to show how being faithful to even a simple pattern could produce some cool effects (and to have fun making something to display!).
They covered one wall, but they weren't the only work I had on display for showcase.
Mary, my co-teacher for one period, thought it would be fun to do something with curve stitching. Having been a co-teacher, I think it's really important for both teachers to have a say in things....but it was really easy this time, because I thought it was a great idea!
I did alter the idea to involve geometric line art instead of actually stitching. Kids were allowed to look up other patterns and optical illusions, too. It won't be on any SOL, but it was fun! I ran the activity with all my classes and put them up across the hall.
Or at least, I put some of them up. I actually enlisted/drafted some kids from my freshman seminar. Mary came by to help and we had everything ready midday Wednesday.
Some other teachers brought some work to display including a slideshow. Scott helped me copy some Sudoku and Kenken puzzles. Then I put out some tessellation patterns for kids to color.
It was a fair amount of work for a total of 5 parents and maybe 10 kids.
However, there were some good conversations and one of my freshman seminar kids came by and played Horrified with her mom! A group of three kids (2 from my classes) came by and ended up playing Hangman on the board, too.
I would have liked more traffic, but it was better than being overrun. The event ended at 7 PM and I came home to Carrie and Shane relaxing. There shouldn't be any more required evenings for the rest of the year.
