Carrie responded to an SOS over Facebook this week. A local farm had a horse down in the mud that couldn't stand up.
One moment I was teaching, the next Carrie was in the room saying "I've got to go!" She left and class went on. This was not the first time she's responded to an SOS (There was an escaped pony, etc). I heard the story later on (and since this is a backlog post, some details are fuzzy).
The barn wasn't far. It was a rescue that Carrie said "had bigger hearts than knowledge of what to do."
The horse was old. Over 30. It had been laying down in the mud for over an hour when Carrie arrived and it's temperature was low. Too low for a horse (I don't remember if Carrie took the temp or they'd taken it just before she arrived).
One of the couple who owned the place thought an enema might provide motivation (and didn't seem to realize just how much water it'd take!), but Carrie took charge said, "Blankets! Get blankets!" And "Have you called your vet yet?"
Amazingly, they got the geriatric horse standing again when it was all said and done. How long will he stay standing? At 30+ years of age, who knows? Carrie felt like she got to do some good in the world, though. She was the only person who responded to the SOS. If it had happened on a weekend or outside class time I would've joined her on the adventure and gotten some pictures!
