Starting off right

If you thought half a year of virtual school would have left me with all the materials I needed for round 2, you thought wrong. I immediately set out to reinvent the wheel.

Thank God there was a snow day and two delays. There was no teacher workday. The county expected me to wrap up Friday and start afresh Monday. The snow day allowed me to create IXL accounts, set up Schoology, and hunt down missing grades from last semester.

I jazzed up the course logos as a fun bonus.

They're a hidden reference to Teen Titans Go. Carrie laughed!

If you're curious, the story made it to NPR.

It probably wouldn't have happened without the snow. The transition was sudden. Several days back, I was talking with 55 students I'd spent half a year with. Tuesday, new zoom links went up and I won't see those kids again unless we go back to school (and even then, I don't know how many I'd recognize in real life!).

Sadly, I'm only working with Marcell one class period....and it starts at 9:30 AM. I have to wake up earlier to have a chance to do horse chores before school now.

I did get a minor bit of revenge on Marcell for the holiday toast recipe. I'd asked our class to send us an email saying "Hi" as a grade. I did the same for my other two periods, as well.

So far, things are off to a decent start. I had a poll asking students how they thought the week went.

It looks good until I point out I have 47 students. 34 responses is a 72% completion rate.

Building rapport and setting expectations takes time. If the number of responses doesn't increase next week I'm going to be calling home for motivational purposes.
