Wednesday night, Monticello came to my old house to wrestle. The bus driver wasn't sure where to drop us off and the team didn't know how to navigate the hallways, so I led the charge.
"This is the main gym?" one of the wrestlers asked.
"Nah, that's for basketball," I replied. "They always had us in the back gym."
It was nostalgic and a little bittersweet. It would have been fun to have Shane with me, but I had to herd wrestlers onto the bus right after school ended. There was no chance to go and get him.
I said hi to Tony (a parent/coach) and some other parents I recognized from my middle school team upon arrival. I started to yell out instruction when Xavier was wrestling out of habit. Then one of my old wrestlers came over and said, "We like you better in blue," after he won his match (Our MS singlets were blue).
It was just me and the head coach, so I was a little more proactive in talking to kids after matches about techniques and defenses. I've held back as the new volunteer, but I think kids benefit from hearing something encouraging and something to focus on to do better next time whether they won or lost.
I didn't get back home until near 10 PM. Shane was already in his room and Carrie was asleep on the couch. Loki was hyper-balitzoid excited to see me, so I took him out to pee.
I cast a moon-shadow!
