Sunday was the last day for volleyball. Shane walks himself in. I park, say "Have fun!", and in he goes.
I'm still 50/50 on loving/hating the no spectators thing. I like going with Shane and seeing how he does, but it does give him an opportunity to show he's independent and not be under my watch 24/7 (which lets me hang out in the car to nap, etc!).
I snuck in near the end to watch a little. The other team was serving. The serve was closer to another kid, but Shane (a little delayed) made a play for it. He sort of dived! I was happy to see him make the attempt.
Unfortunately, it was the winning point. The other team cheered and the players left the court.
Except for Shane. He stayed down on the ground like he was injured, depressed, or both.
I don't think he saw me in the window. I backed out real quick when he did bring his head up and looked my way.
When Shane came out I talked up how I proud I was at him for making an attempt when it was closer to someone else. I left out the "You were acting way over dramatic with that sympathy play" I was thinking (I swear the kid is going to do theater one day).
Still, Shane made it through. He didn't quit. I'd love for him to try volleyball again, but I'm 99% sure he'll say, "No thanks!" I will force him to try something (and not to quit), but once Shane's followed through I leave it up to continue or not. I will sign him up for something next winter, so it would behoove him to find something he likes, though!
And so volleyball ended. I think Shane is a better kid for the experience. Maybe he'll have to play volleyball in PE at some point and this will help him to do better than he otherwise would have. I did notice there were affordable summer camps.....but I'll ask Shane before I sign him up for something!
