Carrie passed up on one horse, but she got a hot tip from Margaret. "Carrie, I'm vetting an ad that you should look at the moment I post it."
Carrie looked and Carrie liked.
Which is why a truck showed up from Kentucky late Monday.
The ad was for Boomer, a 15 year fjord gelding who had been picked up to be a cart horse. Only the owners decided they weren't into carting after all and wanted to give him a good home. He was almost half the price of the first horse we looked at. Carrie, who is currently crushing on fjords, immediately reached out. Many other people did the same, but Carrie stood out because she asked and paid for a vet to take a look. Boomer passed the vet check and Carrie passed the caring check.
Houston, we have a new pony. A very fat pony (so more to love!).
"Here comes the BOOM ready or not! There's a new fjord on the block!" Carrie posted (2 thumbs up for the reference).
Boomer was thrilled to be off the transport. All of the other horses went nuts as expected. We set him up to overnight in the arena.
Carrie said Boomer's arrival weight was ~1435 lbs. A new home = a new diet.
The transporters were low on hay and asked to buy a bale of hay. Carrie was giddy with joy and threw it in free with the tip.
She was allll smiles in the morning!
She even thought it was a little cute how Boomer was trying to cheat on his new diet already! When the hay ran out, he said he'd settle for weeds.
The other horses watched his every move.
Especially as Carrie moved him up to the stall. The cheating was cute, but she wasn't going to allow it to continue!
She wanted to let him meet some of the other horses up close in a safe manner. Ernie was intrigued, but Indy put up a stallion act. He kicked the door, snorted, and acted like a little Mr. Tough Guy (even though he's literally HALF the pony...).
Maddy got moved back one dry lot and Boomer got a lot to himself.
Boomer hasn't been ridden in years and years. He did cartwork instead (which we know nothing about). Carrie plans to restart him from ground zero.
I've asked Carrie to ride on the cart once before the end of summer, though. I don't really want to learn the discipline, but it would be fun and different to try.
After that, it'd be great to sell the cart! We got it for free thrown in with Boomer. The people who owned him were loaded and just wanted it off their property. Getting anything for the cart would be like getting a discount on Boomer's purchase price.
