Shane's Back To School Night (The Backlog!)

I drove Shane to school Tuesday morning. It was faster than waiting on the bus.

Earlier, a form had come out from Shane's school to sign up for early drop off. I'd signed him up, waited to hear back, and then called the school office to check in. While I don't remember the exact words, it translated to something like this: "That's so nice you're trying to follow the rules. No one else is bothering. They just drop their kids off without warning, so we're giving up on the form. You can drop Shane off whenever you like without checking in first."

I'd be dropping Shane off all week long, so it streamlined things for us!

Tuesday night was also Shane's Back to School Night. After we got dinner, we hopped in the car and went right back to Walton!

After checking in with Shane's homeroom to get his schedule, he showed me his locker. That made me nostalgic!

And I felt less nostalgic when Shane opened his locker. It was basically empty! They gave us a ton of textbooks to lug around so a locker was a necessity when I was in Middle School. I don't think I used it much as all the later years of high school (I could store junk in my car), but today's kids mainly have to keep track of their laptop and charger. Textbooks are either online or in the room.

I got to meet all of Shane's teachers. In particular, he really seemed to get along with the English teacher, Mrs. K. There was a whiteboard in the back of the room he drew comics on. Mrs. K's daughter is an 8th grader, and draws comics responding to his. They go back and forth over the course of the week with their doodles! I thought it was great.

Then I saw some of Shane's artwork outside on the walls.

I wish he'd draw more at home, but if someone's not watching (and listening) to him as he does it he'd rather be on electronics.

All the conversations went well. I talked to the 4 core teachers and the gifted resource specialist. They all knew exactly who Shane was (no surprise there!) and seemed to be overall amused by his enthusiastic nature. Hopefully, that doesn't change too much as the year wears on! No one seems too uptight, so I think Shane's going to have a good year.
